Can You Say Cross Training?

Went on my favorite hike today with Calla. We decided to start a little earlier than last time. Not much, just 30 minutes earlier. We hiked the River Loop Trail at Black Mountain Campground, and had lunch at Set Rock Creek Falls. No ice or snow this time, it has all melted off. We hiked and talked and it was really nice, not too cool, not too warm. As we forded the creek I just felt like it was beautiful and I asked Calla to take a picture of it.

The clouds came in and started to sprinkle a little, then it got beautiful again. As we hiked up to Set Rock Creek Falls it was really nice, we had our lunch and the clouds came rolling back in. We decided we better get on back to the car. As we approached the car a little sprinkle started up.

As we were driving out we stopped and Calla took photos of a quilt block, the sun came back out and we decided we would hike up to Roaring Fork Falls. Calla had never been there. She was very much impressed by it.

As we were hiking back to the car it began to rain. It wasn't a down pour, so we just continued to hike on out. We were pretty wet when we got back to the car, but not absolutely drenched. So we hiked about five miles today, beautiful day.

As always ... I want to ride my bicycle ... but taking a break and hiking is nice too.

  1. I think 5 miles is about my limit, don't you? Considering the Caudill Cabin Hike at 10 miles, I don't think I am quite ready.

  2. Important to know your limits. Also, know that today's limit isn't tomorrow's. You'll get there, and you can do the Caudill Cabin Hike on another day.

  3. I agree. This was the seventh year since I did the hike. Hard to believe. As the years have passed I have been thinking if I didn't get there this year, I may never go. I reviewed on the IN and found a link where people from Greensboro were even meeting to go! When I first started with the club it was advertised as a laid back group of people who were retired etc., When I did this hike 7 yrs ago, it was four women and a teen-age boy who was doing it as part of his home schooling project. Since then on some of the latter hikes I've gone on, some of the members seem to have taken it to a higher level of expectations in terms of accomplishing the hikes. James promises me we are going to get there this year, possibly as soon as the end of March, first of April. As you know with his recent issues with plantar faciitus it isn't going to happen this Weds. A couple things hinder me from going on and trying by myself. One, driving distance. The remoteness of the hike itself and the type of hike; with numerous creek crossings I don't feel it would be wise to hike alone. Not remembering exactly the way to the trailhead on the last part of the journey, although I don't think it would be that difficult to find. I did review the hike itself and although advertised as 9.6, two and a half miles of it are level, so basically it is 3 miles of strenuous or steeper terrain, which includes lots of creek crossings and rest periods. Thanks for helping me work thru this on your blog. As you say there will be a day soon, when I will feel ready and all the stars and planets will line up and it will happen! Because I will make it happen. In light of that, the plan is to test James foot on Weds of this week on the Black Mtn Campground hike/s and see the beautiful waterfalls. Surely he can make it a half mile to Roaring Creek...he walks everywhere else.
